Hello fellow contractors,
I am looking to get some feedback on your current protocols regarding subfloor remediation and framing adjustments before dropping heavy custom cabinets and stone countertops during a major kitchen remodel.
Lately, on our projects in the Dallas area, we’ve been running into a lot of older homes with significant joist deflection and unlevel subfloors due to regional soil movement. Shimming cabinets or using leveling compounds under luxury floors works for minor issues, but when we are doing a full kitchen re-layout with heavy natural stone islands, we prefer structural correction.

What are your go-to methods when you encounter a severely unlevel subfloor during a kitchen fit-out? Do you lean more toward structural joist sistering, or are you finding success with heavy-duty self-leveling underlayments under stone finishes?

Our current workflow involves:
- Stripping down to the subfloor and inspecting the existing plywood/OSB sheets for water damage or rot near plumbing lines.
- Checking the joist crowns and installing structural blocking or sistering joists where severe deflection is present.
- Fastening new tongue-and-groove subfloor panels with structural screws rather than nails to eliminate long-term squeaks.
